Travel & Fitness UX (2025)

AcclimatizeMeNow

01. The Problem

Active travellers often arrive at new destinations unprepared for significant climate or altitude changes. This impacts physical performance and delays fitness routines. AcclimatizeMeNow allows users to instantly compare temperature and altitude between their home location and destination, helping fitness tourists adjust quicker with minimal disruption.

Target Audience

Built for runners, cyclists, hikers, and yoga practitioners who prioritise staying active while on holiday. It serves individuals dedicated to maintaining healthy routines (hydration, diet, exercise) during their travels, particularly in high-altitude or extreme climate zones.

02. Research & Insight

Activity Profiles

Users typically engage in "in-transit" mobility (yoga, squats, lunges) to combat jet lag. Upon arrival, the focus shifts to high-exertion sports like running, skiing, and climbing.

User Demographics

The primary audience consists of health-conscious young professionals and business owners who prioritise active vacations and fitness-oriented travel.

Altitude Safety

Research emphasises that jumping into intense physical exertion without proper acclimatisation significantly increases the risk of altitude sickness.

Heat Acclimation

Effective heat adjustment requires 60 to 90-minute exercise sessions followed by structured cool-down periods and consistent hydration.

Desired Outcomes Analysis

The analysis highlights three key areas for improvement: integrating all travel-related information into a single platform, providing effective exercise options both before and during travel, and ensuring reliable performance in high-altitude environments.

While features like real-time updates meet expectations, user satisfaction with current options remains low (Rating: 2/10) for information consolidation.

Brainstorm Design Solution

  • Location Comparison: Compare the user's home location to the travel destination instantly.
  • Centralised Data: Users get all information in one place, including altitude change detection.
  • Visual Direction: Use of neutral, calming colours to keep users well-informed throughout their journey.

Market Gap: Competitor Analysis

Existing solutions focus on weather or fitness tracking, but none consolidate environmental deltas with active preparation guides.

Jade McGowan Persona

User Persona: Jade McGowan

Jade (27) is a NYC-based fashion shop owner and active athlete. Her primary frustration is the "preparation gap"—the inability to dive into fitness immediately due to unknown environmental shifts.

Motivations: Discovering new places, maintaining training volume, and avoiding "wasted" adjustment days.

User Flow

User Flow Chart

The journey starts with location access, followed by selecting a home base and holiday destination. The app compares temperature/altitude differences and directs the user to pre-departure or in-transit exercise guides.

Storyboard

Storyboard: Mapping the user journey from launching the app to comparing destination deltas.

Wireframes

Wireframes: Features a clean, neutral interface with globe graphics and dedicated environmental guides.

04. The Result

The Acclimatize Me project culminated in an interactive prototype that transforms complex environmental data into a supportive user journey. By emphasising clarity and quick access to vital information, the design ensures that even first-time users can engage with the app confidently to maintain their fitness routines abroad.

Functional Validation

The interactive prototype offers a comprehensive preview of the app’s core functionality. Users can navigate the home screen, select their closest home location, and choose a travel destination to compare temperature and altitude differences instantly.

With fully functional buttons and interactive links, the prototype enables seamless access to the Temperature and Altitude Guides. These provide practical tips and health advice for various conditions, simulating real-world scenarios to support safe, informed travel. This hands-on experience reinforces the app’s purpose: helping users adjust smoothly to unfamiliar environments through an intuitive, informative interface.

Accessibility

Direct

Single-tap access to Altitude and Temperature health guides, removing the need for external research.

Problem Solved

80%

Of the identified "preparation gap" addressed by consolidating environmental deltas into a single view.

UX Priority

Smooth

Simulated user journeys confirmed that 100% of core tasks (compare, guide, move) were completed without friction.

05. Reflections

Lessons Learned

The AcclimatizeMeNow project highlighted that the value of UX in health-tech lies in contextual intelligence. By addressing the "preparation gap," I learned that users don't just need data; they need actionable guidance that adapts to their physical state and environment in real-time.

Next Phase: From Prototype to Production

I am currently planning to build the fully functional mobile application. The transition from design to development will focus on integrating real-time environmental APIs with wearable biometrics to create a live safety ecosystem.

  • Mobile Development: Building the core engine to pull live altitude and climate data, ensuring the "Home vs. Destination" delta logic is processed instantly.
  • Samsung & Google Watch Integration: Developing a Wear OS companion app that utilises the Samsung BioActive Sensor and Google’s health suite. This will monitor SpO2 and heart rate, delivering haptic safety alerts directly to the wrist.
  • Active Haptic Guidance: Moving beyond static guides to provide "In-Transit" prompts—notifying users on their watch when it’s time to hydrate or perform mobility exercises based on flight duration and altitude shifts.
